Fireplace Backers

Today I got asked for photos of fireplace backers that I had made in the past, for a potential client. I had almost forgotten about making them 😊 even though I live with one of them every day in my own home. These were all fun and challenging to make and I love the permanence they have in someones home.  It would be exciting to get to do a project like this again.

 This birdbath was made by my husband and I about 13 years ago.  He has not done any mosaic work since, smile.

One World Installation

First 2 panels up.

The students worked on the squares along the outside edges. Each younger student was paired with an older one to work as a teem. The interior design was done by me working on my living room floor (no studio space yet).

All 4 large panels up, and 4 smaller side panels in place, ready for the last of the tiling to be done.

World finished and last hand added.

This was a joint project between me, Mr. and Mrs. Andersen's classes (kindergarten and 5th grade I believe at the time), husband Leo (help with installation), daughter Mara (help with the kids), son Justin (also help with installation), and daughter India (who was in Mr. Andersen's class)

I've been doing housework now for almost 30 yrs. Once, when I was feeling a little fed up with the process I encased my vacuum in concrete.

Garbage Wall

This is a on going project that I have been working on at my home. Similar to Encased in Concrete 88, all the blocks are boxes filled with non-recyclable garbage. I've already started gathering more garbage for this now that I have all I need for Encased in Concrete 88. The wall is turning into quite the habitat. There are lizards and birds that spend their day playing in and on the wall.

8 x 8 feet, wood, ferro cement, ceramic floor tile

This is a piece I made several years ago in memory of a friend.
The materials used are recycled. The wood is salvaged. The floor tile is left over, and recovered tile. The metal used is from an old style satellite dish that I disassembled.

Garbage Pillows

Garbage Pillows 2004 approximately 36 x 36 x 16 inches each
ferro cement & garbage.

As the stuffing to give them shape, each
garbage pillow is filled with non-recyclable garbage, collected
from my own household over a 6 month time period. Then,
each is encased in a layer of concrete to preserve it. My
intent is to show how much space this garbage would take up
if it had actually made it to a landfill.
